A Phenomenological Exploration of Abused Women Finding Empowerment in Same-Sex Relationships

This phenomenological research explored the experiences of women who have faced abuse from their previous male partners and subsequently found empowerment within same-sex relationships. Using reflexive thematic analysis, the study aimed to understand the lived experiences of these women, focusing on the support provided by same-sex partners, the role of these partners in the psychological well-being of survivors, and the transformations women underwent after entering same-sex relationships. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews. Seven abused women survivors were included as participants through purposive sampling. Findings indicate that most of the participants had experienced physical and psychological abuse, but they also highlighted the transformative impact of same-sex relationships on their healing process and empowerment. This is illustrated in three emerging themes: unconditional holistic support; the creation of a safe space for emotional expression and mental healing; and empowerment through rebuilding self-esteem, identity, self-worth, and a sense of true love. As an output of this study, a community extension service was proposed and designed to support the ongoing upliftment and empowerment of women survivors.
