Empowering Security Professionals: Exploring Lived Experiences and Aspirations in Current Training Programs

Abstract

Security professionals are often the first line of defense against threats such as terrorism, cybercrime, and organized criminal activities. Despite their critical function, however, there remains a growing concern over the adequacy of current training programs in preparing them for the complex demands of modern security environments. This study has aimed to explore the lived experiences and aspirations of private security professionals in the current training program. This study employed a descriptive-phenomenological design to explore the lived experiences and aspirations of security professionals regarding current training programs. Colaizzi’s thematic analysis was utilized to treat the data from the informants’ significant statements—six (6) private security guards or private security professionals and four (4) training instructors—to identify patterns, themes, and significant insights from the transcribed interview data. The findings revealed that the training is predominantly viewed as practical and directly applicable to real-world security duties, fostering essential skills, knowledge, confidence, and professionalism. Conclusion: The lived experiences of security personnel within the current training programs offered by private security training agencies are overwhelmingly positive.
