Rehabilitation Program: A Deterrence to Reoffending

This study examines the effectiveness of rehabilitation programs in deterring re-offending and promoting successful reintegration of former inmates into society. The research focused on the experiences of nine male participants who were released from the Ifugao District Jail (IDJ) in the Philippines, utilizing one-on-one interviews and thematic analysis. The findings highlight the significance of religious and livelihood programs in the rehabilitation process. The religious program was found to provide participants with peace of mind, contribute to personal growth by reducing harmful behaviors like excessive drinking, and foster a deeper relationship with God. The livelihood programs improved qualifications by providing skills, knowledge, and certifications, and instilled discipline. The study also explored the application of these skills post-release. The religious program helped participants develop self-control and maintain their spiritual practices. However, despite skills gained from the livelihood program, participants faced challenges including a lack of raw materials and insufficient income. This resulted in participants being unable to fully utilize their acquired skills. The study concludes that while rehabilitation programs at IDJ positively impacted the participants by providing valuable skills and knowledge, there are challenges to the application of these skills upon release. The study suggests that scarce resources and incomplete skill mastery hinder successful reintegration and may contribute to reoffending. The study recommends that policymakers and institutions should focus on improving skill translation and providing economic stability for released individuals.
